The debut record of one of the strangest ensembles we have ever heard. Cesare’s Dog is part Hawkwind-riffing, part gothic expressionism and part,–well, we don’t really know. Vocalist Jonathan Levitt and the band blasts its way through songs like “Marijuana Sunset” and “Take The Bullshit” with the effect pedals on 11. John Galuska’s electric oboe defines Cesare’s Dog’s sound as the group touches on some majestic sounding instrumentals like “Wish” and “Hash Pipe” (hey! these guys thought up this title way before Weezer did). The band even covers some interesting material here with live versions of “Exposure” by Peter Gabriel and “Stigmata Martyr” by Bauhaus. As if icing on this Rock n’ Roll cake, there are a group of bonus tracks that served as demos for most of this material. These tracks are totally worth the price of this CD alone, they are primitive, hilarious and fully aware of their moronic appeal.
It should be noted that the original cassette release of Cesare’s Dog’s debut album included live tracks from gigs in Spring 1990. As noted above the CD version also included some, but not all of the demos songs for the first album. Both the live tracks and demos have been removed from the collection in the music player above. Soon, we will adding a new player for just live Dog material and one for the complete collection of demos from fall 1989.
WARNING: A SlowBurn Records 4 Track Recording. Recorded material proudly does not comply with industry standards.
